Major medieval conferences go online in 2021

The International Medieval Congress and the Medieval Academy of America Annual Meeting are joining the International Congress on Medieval Studies in becoming a virtual event in 2021. Regarded as three of the largest conferences for medievalists, each of them are going online due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The International Medieval Congress announced last week that their conference, which normally attracts up to 3000 people annually, will now be held online from Monday 5 – Friday 9 July 2021 with no face-to-face activity in Leeds.

“This decision has been made with a heavy heart, as we had very much hoped to be able to welcome delegates to Leeds next year”, said Axel Müller, Director of the International Medieval Congress. “We, and the University as a whole, are keen that the IMC continue as a world-leading forum for the exchange of ideas amongst the widest possible community of medieval studies scholars. Given all these factors, we felt that the best and most certain chance of holding a wide-ranging and inclusive Congress involving as many medievalists as possible is to host IMC 2021 online.”

Following consultation with senior management here at @UniversityLeeds, and as a result of the various restrictions in place in many parts of the world to manage the spread of Covid-19, we have taken the decision that #IMC2021 will be held virtually between Mon 5-Fri 9 July 2021

Meanwhile, the Medieval Academy of America (MAA) also announced that their annual event, which was due to take place at Indiana Univesity next April, will also become a virtual event. In their statement, the MAA explained, “we hope that by making this decision early, everyone involved will be able to respond and prepare in a way that will maximize the opportunities afforded by the virtual format. We will be in touch in the coming months with more details.”

Bowing to the inevitable, #MAA2021 will be virtual. Sorry, friends. Hope to see you in person @UVA in 2022… #MedievalTwitter https://t.co/Nx3ZajcGpp
